APPLICATION CLOSED
As a part of the Spencer Foundation’s “Initiative on Philosophy in Educational Policy and Practice,” we are pleased to announce the creation of a graduate institute in philosophy of education that will take place during the summer of 2013 (July 8-19) and continue through two more meetings during the 2013-2014 academic year. Applicants for the “Spencer Foundation Philosophy of Education Institute” should be graduate students in education, philosophy, or political theory who are interested in pursuing normative questions of policy and practice in education. A total of fifteen applicants will be selected to participate.
The aim of this new project is to support the cultivation of young scholars with the knowledge and skills for future philosophical engagement with education. To that end, the Institute will be structured in three major components: 1) a ten day intensive summer course at Loyola University’s Water Tower campus in downtown Chicago; 2) the subsequent development of a paper based on the participant’s particular interests in the course material; and 3) two workshops in early 2014 to develop and (potentially) present these papers.
The summer course will be taught by Harry Brighouse (University of Wisconsin—Madison), Jennifer Morton (City College of New York), and Bryan Warnick (Ohio State University), and will focus on issues of justice in education that are both philosophically rich and attentive to the reality of current educational injustices. During the course, participants will be introduced to a variety of disciplinary approaches that support philosophical work on education, and will be expected to develop an abstract for a future paper that will be submitted to the American Educational Research Association’s (AERA) annual conference.
Participants will regroup to discuss drafts of their papers during a workshop to be held just prior to the American Philosophical Association’s Central Division annual conference (February 26 – March 1, 2014 in Chicago). A second workshop to review final drafts will be held just prior to AERA’s Annual Meeting (April 3 – 7, 2014 in Philadelphia). These two workshops will be an opportunity for participants to experience a major conference in both philosophy and education, and for those who are accepted to present at AERA, a chance to present their work.
Participants’ expenses will be covered for all meetings, including travel, accommodations, breakfast, lunch, and select dinner events during the summer course, the APA Conference and workshop, and the AERA conference and workshop. In addition Spencer will provide all necessary summer course materials and cover registration fees for the APA and AERA conferences. For further details on each of the items below, click on the item:
